The Text Message – Poem
Cynthia Gibbs wrote this heartfelt poem that really hit home with me. Enjoy and thank you Cynthia!
In a pushed-back chair in a crowded room,
Unaware of her surroundings, many assume
Sits a middle-aged mother, phone in hand
Quietly texting as fast as she can.
She had waited all week without a word;
Had cried many times til her vision was blurred.
Then the message “Just want u to know I’m OK”
Appeared on her screen as she sat in the café.
Her friends had smiled as she snatched up her phone -
They knew who it was by the sound of its tone
And the relieved expression that washed over her face -
Their voices grew hushed as they gave her some space.
Now strangers nearby give a puzzled glance
And are wondering why she grabs this chance.
Why she first smiles, and then wipes a tear
And seems so oblivious to all who are near.
But her time is precious and her minutes are few
To send back her replies “I luv & miss u!”
“Do u need anything?” “R ur buddies OK?”
And “Did u have a nice day 2day?”
In no time at all it comes to an end
As she writes one more message and presses “send”.
For her soldier must leave now and be on his way
Where he’s going, he cannot say.
She longs and prays for the day he comes home
But today her love must be sent through her phone.

I need to her from my son! I miss him so much
Very good poem!! It is so good to hear when they have made it back from flight and they are ok:) It is hard waiting to hear from them, hours seem like years.
I cherish every time that I hear from my son now…..it is going to be extremely hard when he deploys. I am learning real fast the true meaning of ARMY MOM, ARMY STRONG!!!!!

I am not a Mom of a soldier but a Grandmother of one of our soldiers. My prayers go up for our boys in the early hours of the morning! I have kept my grandson’s message on my phone so I am able to just hear his voice the night before he left. My arms still feel him in my arms when I first held him and prayed for him and his life, wondering what was ahead for him in life. I will never stop praying for he and all the troops that have given us such a blessing of great peace and freedom. God Bess Our Troops!

I am the wife of a soldier. It is one proudest I can ever bee to stand behind my husband as he trains the men and women being sent over seas. A friend of mine recently lost her husband in Afghanistan 2 weeks ago and he was laid to rest yesterday….it is heart reaching to see but as an army wife we all stood by her.side! I hope all our troops still overseas come home soon and safe! God bless you all and all the families that sacrifice Wat we do to support them all!
I know this feeling all to well. I get so excited to get an email or to see my son on a chat line. I get tears in my eyes. I miss him so much.
Been there and done that way too many times! Have sat parked on the shoulder of the interstate because I didnt want to ‘miss’ the moment. Seems we will do most anything to cease the moment when offered to us!!! Thanks for sharing this!
My son is not deployed, I cannot imagine how hard it is not hearing. My son is still in training at Ft Gordon. It is still very hard not to hear from him.
So proud of all these young men and their families that make these sacrifies.
